THESE MEETINGS MAKE IT EASY FOR YOU TO STAY INFORMED|

During one of his fireside chats, Franklin D. Roosevelt talked about the importance of "a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over its government." One good way to become informed about legislation affecting you and your health care is to attend these upcoming presentations.

The American Association for Retired Persons, New Dimensions (retired people from Virginia Tech) and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees are sponsoring a discussion on the current status of NATIONAL HEALTH CARE legislation. Bill Lukhard from AARP will lead the program on May31 at 10a.m. at the Blacksburg Community Center on Patrick Henry Drive.

The June 1 Wednesday Wondering from the Virginia Center for Active Retirement at Virginia Tech is on LEGISLATION AFFECTING OLDER ADULTS regarding social security and health care. Laura Feldman, executive director of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare in Washington, D.C., will be the guest speaker.

The free seminar is 9-11a.m. at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, conference room F. Call 231-5183 to make a reservation.

There's still space to attend TOMORROW'S CHOICES, the workshop on post-retirement planning. Events will be held May23-26 at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center.

Virginia Tech's Center for Active Retirement and the AARP will sponsor sessions on housing and long-term care, Alzheimer's disease, substance and alcohol abuse, health and nutrition, financial planning, wills and trusts.

Nancy Glisson, Miss Virginia 1993-94, will speak at the May25 dinner, and Bill Meck from WSLS Channel 10 will provide the breakfast program on May26.

The complete program with meals is $135. Daily commuter fees are $25 per day for sessions, lunch and breaks, and $12 for dinner. For more information, call 231-5241 or 231-5183.

Don't forget the POETRY CONTEST for seniors 60 and older. Poems must be original, unpublished and less than 60 lines. Three entries per person allowed. Deadline is July29.

The RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg, 382-5775:

The RSVP program offers volunteer opportunities to New River Valley residents age 55 and older. RSVP volunteers manned stations at the Tour DuPont bicycle race. They sort and package food, visit nursing homes, cheer up people, help local organizations and serve whenever and wherever needed.

They also make friends, go out to lunch and enjoy the company of one another.

The GILES COUNTY SENIOR CENTER, 1320 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg, 921-3924:

The AARP chapter 502 will hold a potluck luncheon on Friday at noon. The program will include information on health care and living wills.

If you need water therapy, swimming is Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:15a.m. If you want some wellness therapy, try the walking group on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30a.m.

The RADFORD SENIOR CENTER, 27 First St., 731-3634:

The Radford AARP chapter will hold a potluck dinner tonight at 5p.m.

The van leaves at 9:30a.m. on Friday for the Mercer Mall in West Virginia.

The senior center will be closed Friday and May27.

The CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173:

Seniors interested in getting out for a day can hop on the van at 8:30a.m. on Friday for Shatley Springs in Ashe County, North Carolina. The following week, you can go to Cochram's General Store in Floyd at 4p.m.

Transportation fee is $4 for each trip, and the van departs from the National Guard Armory.

The PULASKI SENIOR CENTER, 106 N. Washington Ave., 980-3969:

Those going to the American Music Fair on Friday meet at the senior center at 5p.m. Dinner will be on your own at the Bonfire Restaurant before the fair. Admission and transportation is $12.

The Dine 'Round Club will go the Log House Restaurant in Wytheville on May 25 at 12:30p.m.
