GRAYSON COUNTY WINS BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Wes Self got his eighth consecutive win as Grayson County defeated Giles 12-3 to capture the Mountain Empire District baseball championship in a playoff game at Calfee Park in Pulaski.

Self struck out 16, gave up seven hits and walked two in a complete game as he lowered his Timesland-best ERA to 0.79.

Giles (12-6 overall, 8-2 in the district) took a 1-0 lead in the first but the Blue Devils scored three runs in the second and never trailed again.

Keith Weatherman went 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead Grayson County (13-5, 9-1) at the plate. Bobby Cheeks, Shane Widener and Brandon Ayers also had two hits each for the Blue Devils.

The victory automatically qualifies Grayson County for the Region C tournament. The Blue Devils will also play host to a first-round Mountain Empire District tournament game Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Their opponent will be determined Monday in a play-in game.

Mike Krulich and Charlie Green III of the Fincastle Country Club hold a four-stroke lead after the first round of the Virginia State Golf Association Four-Ball championship. Krulich and Green had six birdies and no bogeys in a best-ball 6-under-par 64 on the Fincastle course.
