ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

New car dealers in the Roanoke Valley enjoyed a 71.2 percent sales gain in April compared to a year earlier. They registered 1,000 new cars last month, compared to only 584 in April 1993, according to the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association. The April figure was off 4 percent from 1,046 in March, which was the best month for local dealers since October 1986.

So far this year, dealers have registered 3,019 new cars in Roanoke, Salem and Roanoke County, compared to 1,974 at the same point a year ago.

That's a year-to-date gain of 52.9 percent.
