ROANOKE COLLEGE recently recognized students from the Roanoke Valley for academic excellence.

Roanoke recipients of individual awards are: Craig A. Bayse, John Schumacher Prize and Wayne A. Sisson Prize; Laura A. Boutilier, John T. Bowman Memorial Award; Jennifer A. Crocker, Will Selzer Political Science Prize; Mitzi L. Garman, Outstanding Student in Spanish; Benjamin W. Goodman-Dalton, Outstanding Student in German; J. Derek Guynn, Charles C. Wise Poetry Award; Marla J. Hall, Jesse Lee and Mary Elizabeth Lucado Award and Roy H. Ritter Southern History Prize; Barbara O. Hassell, Mamie S. Patterson Foreign Language Department Travel Award; Beth G. Hungate, Criminal Justice Prize; Susan E. Johnston, Patricia M. Gathercole Literature Award; James T. Jordan, Outstanding Student in Business Administration; Ann E. Parker, Julie McBriety Chalfant Memorial Award; Christopher R. Rhodes, Andrew Murphy Science Award; Gregory L. Richards, Wall Street Journal Award; and Emily K. Umberger, Salem Times-Register Prize-Roanoke Valley and Annie Terrill Bushnell Prize. Salem recipients of individual awards are: Danyel D. Brugh, Frank E. Snow Award; Kristine L. Garren, Karl W. Beck Memorial Award; and Lora L. Schwehr, Phi Beta Kappa Club Scholarship. Vinton recipients are: Carmen R. Agra-Boitnott, William H. Castle Accounting Award and Alpha Kappa Psi Key and Certificate; Susan E. Gross, Sam R. Good Award; Jennifer L. Mullin, Fortnightly Club Scholarship; and Robert L. Ward III, William Sandridge Leadership Award.

Hubert P. Firebaugh of Daleville received the Fine Arts Prize in Music.

Those named senior scholars are: Lucinda K. Buchanan, Elizabeth A. Foti, Kari D. Hall, James T. Jordan, Erica A. Lipps, Christopher R. Rhodes, David W. Thompson and Kathryn P. Weaver, all from Roanoke.

Also, Danyel D. Brugh and Kristine L. Garren, both from Salem.

Also, Carmen R. Agra-Boitnott and Amy J. Stephenson, both of Vinton.

The junior scholars are: Karen A. Alexander, Jeffrey A. Beckner, Domitila S. Damewood, Katherine L. Dowdy, J. Heather Graybeal, S. Kyle Highfill, Jacqueline D. McBride, Margaret E. Morris and Amy L. Rader, all of Roanoke.

Junior scholars from Salem include: Carolyn C. Barger, Cammi L. Beason, Elizabeth S. Boardwine, Stacy L. Greenway, Vernon C. Miller, M. Elizabeth Rusinko, Lynn M. Schwehr and Stephanie R. Wright. Junior Scholars named are: Sherry S. Streng, Daleville; Steven E. Crowder, Fincastle; Jonathan E. Lee, New Castle; Michael L. Bedwell, Troutville; and Susan E. Gross, Vinton.

Alpha Lambda Delta Senior certificates were awarded to students who graduated with a 3.5 or above average, including David W. Thompson of Roanoke and Danyel D. Brugh of Salem. Recognized for membership in Alpha Kappa Delta, a national honorary society for superior records in sociology are: Lucinda K. Buchanan, John W. Garrett IV, Beth G. Hungate, Ashli K. Jones, Belva J. Matherly, Jacqueline D. McBride, all of Roanoke; and Elizabeth S. Boardwine of Salem. Recognized for membership in Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honorary fraternity for freshmen whose grade point average is 3.5 after the first term: Christine M. Abraham, A. Students recognized for membership in Delta Mu Delta, a national honorary society recognizing superior academic achievements of majors in business administration, are: Jeffrey A. Beckner, Scott G. Burton, Kimberly A. McGarry and Gregory L. Richards, Roanoke; Jerrie G. Ginn, Judith C. Minahan, Lynn M. Schwehr and Stephanie R. Wright, Salem; Delma L. Smith, Eagle Rock; Steven E. The following students have been recognized for membership in Omicron Delta Epsilon, a national honorary economics society: Jeffrey A. Beckner and Amy L. Rader, Roanoke; Jerrie G. Ginn and Stephanie R. Wright, Salem; and Carmen R. Agra-Boitnott, Vinton.

Recognized for membership in Pi Sigma Alpha, a national political science honor society for students with superior academic records: Paul A. Branin of Roanoke, Whitwell C. Kelly of Salem and Mary K. Whitlock of Troutville. Stacy L. Greenway of Salem was named for membership in Pi Mu Epsilon, a national honor fraternity for excellence in mathematics. Katherine A. Combiths of Roanoke and Scott S. Critzer of Fincastle were recognized for membership in Sigma Tau Delta, a national honor society recognizing superior achievement of English majors.

Margaret E. Morris of Roanoke was nominated for membership in Psi Chi, a national honor society for psychology majors.

Recognized for membership in Xi Theta Chi, an honorary fraternity for students showing proficiency in modern languages, were: Denise C. Clark, Anthony M. Hopper, Susan E. Johnston and Michelle L. McCoy, Roanoke; and Jennifer K. DeGolyer, Eric-Gene Shrewsbury, and Leslie E. Waid, Salem.

\ JENNIFER PARKER and ERICA ANN PANDAPAS, both Roanoke students at Hollins College, were recognized during the college's recent honors convocation.

Parker, an adult student in the Horizon Program, received the F.J. McGuigan Psychology Award for Excellence. Parker has a concentration in education and psychology.

Pandapas, daughter of John and Aileen Pandapas, received the David L. Longfellow History Prize. Pandapas is a freshman.

\ DEBORAH G. LYNN of Roanoke has been named to the Hollins College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Virginia Iota.

Lynn, an adult student in the Horizon program at Hollins, is a psychology major.

\ ERIN DONCHERS and RIENNE JONES were selected as co-recipients of the 1993 Richard E. Morgan-SAR Essay Contest.

The Patrick Henry High School students will receive a $1,000 savings bond from the Fincastle Resolution's Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.

The essays of Aaron Chandler, John Eure, Eric Katz, Richard Light, Tanya Smart and John Harris were noted as warranting "special mention."

\ CARON CAUSEY and ETHAN VIA received the national I Dare You leadership award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership.

Causey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Causey. Via is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren G. Via Jr.

The award is made available each year by the American Youth Foundation in cooperation with principals, headmasters and 4-H county agents across the country. In addition to a certificate of recognition, Causey and Via received a scholarship opportunity to attend the American Youth Foundation's International Leadership Conference in Michigan or New Hampshire.

\ WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY has announced the names of three juniors from Roanoke who have been chosen as freshman dormitory counselors for the 1994-1995 academic year.

They are: Adam M. Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Ray Williams of Skylark Circle; James M. Turner III, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Turner Jr. of Wycliff Avenue; and Elizabeth G. Weaver, daughter of Holly L.H. Weaver of Stonehenge Square.

\ COURTNEY A. TUCKER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl M. Tucker of Roanoke, was chosen as the Personnel Chair in Washington and Lee University's 1996 Mock Convention.

Student delegates at the convention will attempt to predict the presidential nominee for the Republican party. Tucker, a sophomore, will be one of three overseeing the event.
