She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Lucky Bowman; her parents, Leander and Mary Holland, of Copperhill; and brother and sisters, Clarice Conner, Catherine Burns, Mimmie Moran, Lula Carr, Belle Siner, Hazel Moran, Allie Conner and Frank Holland. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene and Charlie B. Grisso, Roanoke, and Joyce and Jimmy Johnson, Fincastle; and grandchildren, Cindy R. Grisso, Roaoke; Connie R. BROADWELL, Grace Helen Turner, 80, of Crescent View Retirement Community, Arden, N. C., died Friday, May 27, 1994 at Mt. Area Hospice. Mrs. Broadwell was born in Rocky Mount, Va., to the late George Waller and Susan Marshall Turner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Edward Broadwell Sr. She was a retired Registered Nurse at Meredith College, member of Peakland United Methodist Church, past member of the Administrative Board of the Fairmont United Methodist Church, Raleigh, N. C., member of St. Elizabeth Alumni Association, member of Raleigh Women's Club and Raleigh Garden Club. She received h er nurses training at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Richmond, Va. and John's Hopkins, Baltimore, Md. Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Blaine Broadwell and James Troy Franklin, Jr. Lynchburg; one son and his wife, Freeman Edward and Donna A. Brock Broadwell Jr., Asheville, N. C.; one sister, Martha Turner Flora, Roanoke; four grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in Blanford Cemetery in Petersburg, Va. with the Rev. Robert M. Blackburn Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to Mt. CAMPBELL, Dorothy S., 69, of Roanoke, passed away, Thursday, May 26, 1994. She was born in Shelby, N.C. the daughter of the late Elizabeth M. and Charles M. Sappenfield Sr. She attended Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. and was active in the Home Circle of Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Roanoke Civitan Club and the Penn State Club of Southwestern Va. Dorothy was married for 47 years to G. Keen Campbell who preceded her in death. Surviving are her brother, Charles M. Sappenfield Jr., Muncie, Ind.; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael K. and Jenni Campbell, Lynchburg; her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia C. and Geoffrey M. Edelman, Roswell, Ga.; her grandchildren, Meghan, Ben, and Caylin Campbell, Lynchburg, Caryn and Jonathan Edelman, Roswell, Ga . A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 29, 1994, 2 p.m. from Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1831 Deyerle Road, S.W. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Interment will be private. The family suggests memorials be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or Roanoke Civitan Club Unified Playground Project in her memory. CAUTHEN, Irby Bruce, Jr., 74, of Charlottesville, Professor Emeritus of English and former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Virginia, died on May 27, 1994. He was born in Rock Hill, SC., on August 24, 1919, son of the late Irby Bruce and Ruth Kimbrell Cauthen. He was graduated B.A. from Furman University where he also received an Honorary Doctor of Literature Degree. His graduate degrees, M.A. and Ph.D., were from the University of Virginia. In addition he attended the Bread Loaf School of English in Middlebury College an the University of Birmingham in Stratford-upon-Avon. Mr. Cauthen was
Assistant Professor of English, Hollins College, before returning to the University's Department of English in 1954 as Assistant and then Associate Professor. He was appointed Professor in 1964, a position he held until his election as Professor Emeritus in 1987 when he continued to teach part-time. Mr. Cauthen was successively Assistant and Associate
Dean until he became Dean of the College from 1962 until 1978. During his tenure he received the IMP Society Award for furthering student-faculty relations; the Raven Society Award and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. In 1977 he received the University's highest honor, the Thomas Jefferson Award. He was president of the Bibliographical Society of the University and had been sec retary of the Faculty Senate, the regional chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation, a member of the Board of Trustees of Hollins College and of its Board of Overseers. He belonged to a number of professional organizations and to Phi Beta Kappa, the Raven Society and Omicron Delta Kappa. He published various essays on English and American literature and edited several Renaissance dramas. During World War II, Mr. Cauthen served in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After entering the service as an enlisted man, he was commissioned as an officer overseas. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1940 where he had served as an elder. Mr. Cauthen is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Greear Cauthen; two sons, Irby Bruce Cauthen III and his wife Anne, of Richmond, and James Noah Greear Cauthen and his wife, Helen, of Louisville; a brother, Rea Kimbrell Cauthen; and a sister, Virginia C. Scruggs, both of Rock Hill; two granddaughters, Eleanor Anne and Sarah Greear Cauthen; and a grandson, William Morgan Cauthen. In place of flowers, it is suggested that memorial gifts may be made to the University Alumni Fund, P. O. Box 3346, Charlottesville, 22903, designated for the Alderman Library. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 31, at 5 pm, at Westminster Presbyterian Church followed by a reception at the Greencroft Club. CHITTUM, Alice Virginia, 72, of Route 1, Buena Vista, died Thursday, May 26, 1994, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Born in Rockbridge County on November 6, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Harrison Hartless and Mary Elizabeth Clark Hartless. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Survivors include her husband, Harold L. Chittum, Buena Vista; four daughters, Alice H. Hamilton and Judy Madison, both of Buena Vista, Mildred Feltner, Charles City and Nadeli Dolan, Chester; a son, Carl V. Chittum, Buena Vista; two sisters, Marjorie Berry, Chester and Frances Southers, Fayetteville, N.C.; two brothers, Lawrence Hartless, Buena Vista and Tom W. CRUNKILTON, Sterl G. 80, of Butler, Ohio, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 19. Mr. Crunkilton was a retired dairy farmer and a sales representative for Davco Fertilizer for 30 years. A lifetime resident of Pike Township, Ohio, he served as its clerk for the past 16 years. He had been a member of the North Liberty United Methodist Church since 1937, and was a 1932 graduate of Butler High School. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen K. Crunkilton; other survivors include two daughters, Norma Miller, Butler, Ohio; and Donna Horn, Howard, Ohio; three sons, David Crunkilton, Fredericktown, Ohio; James Crunkilton, Butler, Ohio, John R. Crunkilton, Blacksburg; also surviving are three sisters and three brothers; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was the daughter of the late Robert David Carroll and Eula Bell Cummingham Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband, Landon Dillon and a son, William Eugene Dillon. KINZIE, Paul E., 89, of Troutville, passed away Thursday, May 26, 1994 at his home. He was born September 12, 1904 a son of the late Charles Edward and Rosa Bowman Kinzie of Troutville. He was a member and deacon of Troutville Church of the Brethren. Mr. Kinzie was a 50 year charter member of the Troutville Lions Club and attended National Business College. He was an orchardist all of his life. Mr. Kinzie was preceded in death by a son Lewis Paul Kinzie, two brothers Harold Raymond Kinzie, Daniel Cline Kinzie, one sister-in-law, Frances Bryant Kinzie; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Samuel F. WALLACE, Dave Richard, 77, of Radford, died Friday May 27, 1994 at Radford Community Hospital. He is retired from Hercules, Inc. He is survived by his wife; Ernestine Wallace, Radford; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Eva Wallace, Radford; one daughter and son-in-law, Melvene and Ralph Prescott, Blacksburg; four sisters, Alice Clark, and Dicie Amos, both of Lebanon, Va, Nannie Hughes, Castlewood, Va, Kathleen Smith, Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Norman Wallace, Knoxville, Tenn. Also survived by three grandchildren, Jerry Wallace, Jr., Rick Scott, and Ginny Scott. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. from the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with the Rev Robert Sowell officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home in Radford. WYRICK, Robert Rufus, 52, of Parrott, died Wednesday, May 25, 1994, at Radford Community Hospital. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Dennis Shopshear of Big Sandy, Tenn; a daughter, Cindy Wyrick of Canton, Mich.; his mother, Lura Lorene Wyrick of Parrott; one brother, Clyde Alvin Wyrick of Dublin; four sisters, Ilene Montgomery of Dublin, Patsy Sifford of Radford, Colleen Montgomery of Parrott, and Jean Bregenzer of Radford; also survived by eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 30, 1994, at 2 p.m. from the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in the Sifford Cemetery in Parrott. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home in Radford.
