HYLTON TOPS CAVE SPRING IN BASEBALL

Mike Colangelo drove in three runs with two hits, including a home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning, as Hylton defeated Cave Spring 6-2 in the Northwest Region baseball tournament Monday.

Hylton (20-1) won for the 20th straight time after losing its season opener. Gary MacKinlay had two hits and Jon Hand struck out eight in running his record to 10-0 for the Bulldogs.

Kevin Davis and David Dunston had four of Cave Spring's six hits and drove in both runs. The Knights (15-6) fell behind 3-0 after one inning and trailed 6-0 after three.

Cave Spring starter Brent Shorter (3-1) was roughed up in the first inning. Colangelo led off with a home run and the Bulldogs sent seven batters to the plate in taking their 3-0 lead. Hylton also sent seven men to the plate in the third inning against reliever Michael Price. Robey Caldwell relieved Price with the bases loaded and nobody out and got out of the jam. He went the rest of the way, striking out five Hylton batters in four innings. \

Northwest Region softball

WOODBRIDGE - Woodbridge pitcher Michelle Matthews threw a two-hitter as the Vikings shut out Patrick Henry 14-0 in a Group AAA Northwest Region softball game.

Matthews struck out 10 and walked two as she got her 17th victory of the year.

Kay Murphy led the Vikings (19-2) at the plate with a triple in the first inning and a home run in an eight-run fourth inning.

Patrick Henry pitcher Shelly King (4-13) gave up only seven hits, but the Vikings capitalized on 10 errors by the Patriots (7-14) en route to the win.

Woodbridge will face an undetermined opponent in the second round Wednesday. \
