U.S. OPEN FINDS NEW HOME ON NBC

NBC filled a major gap in its sports coverage Wednesday with its first Grand Slam golf tournament, taking the U.S. Open away from ABC after nearly three decades.

``This comes at a perfect time for us at NBC as our golf coverage has matured and come so far in recent years,'' NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol said in a conference call.

ABC will televise its 29th U.S. Open on June 18-19 at Oakmont in Pittsburgh. Next year, NBC will show its first U.S. Open, during the 100th year of the sponsoring U.S. Golf Association, from Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, N.Y.

ABC still has the British Open, while CBS holds exclusive U.S. rights to the Masters and PGA Championship.
