TEEN CHARGED IN ASSAULT

A 19-year-old was charged with assaulting a Roanoke police officer at the Great James H. Drew Exposition about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

David T. Johnson, of an unknown address, was arrested after police said he kicked Officer T.S. Salter, who was attempting to break up a fight at the fair, police said.

More than 100 people gathered to watch as 10 men attempted to kick Don Durell Turpin, 21, of Crescent Street Northwest. Police used pepper spray to break up the crowd. Police said Turpin was charged with disorderly conduct after he continued to be disruptive.

Police also continue to investigate a sexual assault on the fairgrounds that occurred about 8 p.m. Sunday. A 28-year-old West Virginia woman told police that a man at the fair told her that he would give her some stuffed toys for her children if she came into one of the concession trucks. She entered the truck, where she was sexually assaulted.

The fair manager told police that the man had worked as a concession operator, but that there were no records of his identity.
