BOTETOURT COUNTY PLANT FIRE BURNS SUPERVISOR

An employee of General Shale Webster Inc. suffered first- and second-degree burns Friday morning after hot fuel oil spewed onto his forearms.

The employee, a supervisor at the Botetourt County plant, was treated at a Roanoke hospital and released. Officials of the brick company would not release his name.

Mike Lilly, the plant manager, said a fuel-oil line feeding a new burner on a kiln leaked and caught fire. The 9:15 a.m. fire burned wiring at the plant and forced it to close for the rest of the day.

Lilly said the plant, in the Blue Ridge section of the county, will reopen this morning.

Inspectors from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were not expected to come to the plant, Lilly said.
