CHAPLAIN GATHERS BOOKS FOR S. AFRICA

A Hampton University chaplain has collected about 5,000 secondhand books to send to Soweto, a black South African township deprived of reading material under segregation.

Michael A. Battle flew to Johannesburg in April for South Africa's first free presidential election. Apartheid, he was told, had left many black areas without libraries and many black children without books.

When Battle returned home, he talked about his trip to students at Washington Middle School in Newport News. After he found out the school planned to discard some outdated textbooks, he suggested sending them to South Africa. He made the same request to the Hampton school system.
