EDUCATORS' SALARIES A MIXED BAG

RICHMOND - Faculty at Virginia colleges and universities are earning more than the national average, but salaries of the state's public school teachers continue to lag.

A study released this week by the Southern Regional Education Board found that faculty at Virginia's four-year public colleges and universities averaged $49,134 in 1993-94, compared with $48,200 nationally and $44,487 for the 15-state region.

The Virginia faculty average was the highest in the region, which includes Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and West Virginia.

However, the average public school teacher salary in Virginia was $33,128, below the national average of $35,958. The regional average was $30,600. Virginia ranked second in the region behind Maryland, where the average public school teacher salary was $39,937.

The study found that salaries for Virginia educators at all levels have grown more slowly than the national average since 1990.
