The man - who wore a black ski mask - entered the store around 9:15 p.m. brandishing a small handgun, robbed a female customer and made her lie on the floor, said Radford Deputy Police Chief Jonny Butler. When the male clerk returned from the back of the store where he had been putting soft drinks in a cooler, he also was robbed.
Butler said the man got away with less than $300.
"It shook us all up right much," said Gloria Roark, who has run the store with her husband for nine years. "We're surprised it hasn't happened before now," she said. "We're just glad no one was hurt."
Roark noted that a nearby Pizza Hut also recently was robbed at gunpoint, but Butler said that incident - in which $1,000 to $2,000 was taken on May 20 - appears to be unrelated to the convenience store robbery.
Radford police describe the suspect as male, approximately six feet tall, last seen wearing dark pants and a blue and green striped shirt.
Sgt. Wayne Frye said authorities also are looking for someone driving a burgundy or red small or compact car who might have been involved. Radford Police ask that anyone with additional information call 731-3627.
