BOY, 5, KNOCKS CAR OUT OF GEAR, RUNS OVER GIRL, 5

A 5-year-old girl was injured after a car ran over her in the yard of her Northwest Roanoke home Thursday afternoon.

Danielle Josephine Welch, of the 200 block of Nancy Drive, was in stable condition Friday in the orthopedic ward of Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to a nursing supervisor. Police said Danielle was treated for a fractured left arm, burns and abrasions.

According to a police report, Danielle was playing in her wagon in the yard of her home at 4:44 p.m., when a 5-year-old boy got into an unlocked car that was parked nearby and knocked it out of gear.

A man who was leaving the girl's home saw the car rolling toward her but was unable to stop it.
