DECKER LEADS CHARGE AT STATE AM

Two-time former champion Keith Decker of Fieldale, playing flawlessly for the 24 holes he needed, led the advance Saturday through two rounds of match play in the Virginia State Golf Association Amateur.

"I played very well," the 34-year-old furniture company executive said of his bogey-free 7-and-6 routs of state junior champion Robby Rasmussen of Chesapeake and Roanoke insurance broker Mike Smith.

Defending champion David Partridge and the 1990 winner Hank Klein, both of Richmond, also moved into today's quarterfinals at the 7,238-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Club course.

Partridge, a 39-year-old insurance executive, squeezed out a 1-up victory over three-time former winner Tom McKnight of Galax, then beat Pat Tallent of Vienna, 4 and 3.

Klein, 25, defeated Jeff Scheumann of Newport News 3 and 1 and defeated David Oakley of Vienna 3 and 2.

Partridge will play J.P. Leigh, 46, of Chesapeake, and David Brogan, 36, of Lexington, will tackle Jack Barrett, a 50-year-old retired Navy man from Virginia Beach, in the upper bracket.

In the lower bracket, Klein faces Scott Inman, 32, of Springfield, and Decker plays Scott Shingler, a 22-year-old George Mason senior from Woodbridge.

McKnight was not the only former champion to lose. Allen Barber of Yorktown, the 1992 winner, was beaten 6 and 4 by Smith in the opening round.

The day's biggest shocker was turned in by Chris Clemens, a 29-year-old Salem attorney, who routed tournament medalist Simon Cooke of Richmond 7 and 5 in the first round.

Clemens lost to Leigh 3 and 2 in the afternoon. Earlier, Leigh beat Steve Gilley of Ridgeway 1-up with a birdie on the final hole.

Two 2-up victories over Billy Judah of Chesapeake and Pat Cawthorne of Spotsylvania moved Brogan into the quarterfinals.

Inman, a former Louisiana State player, beat Jeff Shield of Melfa 2 and 1 and then used 13 consecutive pars for a 6-and-5 romp over Virginia Tech golfer Curtis Deal of Chesapeake.
