Cabrera carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and struck out 12 batters as the Kinston Indians beat the Salem Buccaneers 3-0 Saturday night in a Carolina League game.
Cabrera (4-9) allowed one hit in 7 2/3 innings in winning a pitchers' duel against Doorneweerd (2-3), who allowed five hits and two runs and struck out seven in six innings.
Kinston (6-6) scored in the bottom of the first when Chad Townsend singled home Juan Andujar. The Indians added two more runs in the seventh, including a solo home run by Eddie Lantigua that chased Doorneweerd. Steven Soliz tripled in a run to make it 3-0.
Cabrera retired the first 10 batters of the game before issuing back-to-back walks to Chance Sanford and Jay Cranford. He got out of the jam by striking out Jake Austin and getting a flyball from Danny Clyburn.
The Kinston defense helped preserve the no-hitter through the middle innings. Rightfielder Jon Nunnally made a diving catch of a sinking drive off Sanford's bat in the sixth inning, and Andujar robbed Clyburn of a hit in the seventh by making a diving stop up the middle.
Cabrera stayed out of trouble until Jon Farrell reached on a Lantigua error to lead off the eighth. With two out, Eddie Brooks broke up the no-hitter with a single to leftfield. Bo Magee relieved Cabrera and ended the threat by striking out Mitch House.
Magee pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to gain his first save.
