ETC. UVA'S PALMER LEADS U.S. TO BASKETBALL TITLE

In Taipei, Taiwan, Virginia forward Wendy Palmer scored six of the United States' eight points in overtime as it beat South Korea 90-89 to win the Jones Cup for the seventh time in 14 years.

Palmer, who finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds, scored with 1:08 left in overtime to give the United States an 88-87 lead. Charisse Sampson of Kansas made two free throws with 36 seconds left for a three-point U.S. lead, enough to hold off South Korea's final basket with 20 seconds left.

La'Keshia Frett of Georgia led the United States (8-0) with 30 points, and Stacey Reed of Kentucky added 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Frett is a former standout at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va.
