PITCHING NOT ENOUGH FOR BUCS

Salem pitchers held up their end of the deal again Monday night against Kinston: Marc Wilkins, Stan Parris, Rich Townsend and Matt Ryan combined on a five-hitter one night after the Bucs got a four-hitter from four pitchers.

But the defense and offense let them down: Salem made four errors and only scored two runs on eight hits and four Indians errors.

The result: a 3-2 Kinston victory in Carolina League baseball at Grainger Stadium.

Townsend took the loss, giving up one run on one hit and one walk in the seventh inning.

Eddie Brooks continued to struggle at shortstop for the Bucs, making his ninth and 10th errors since signing with the Pittsburgh organization in June. Left fielder Danny Clyburn made his eighth and third baseman Jay Cranford had his 30th error of the season.

Charles York (5-4) picked up the victory with a perfect inning of relief for the Indians. Bo Magee finished to earn his second save of the season.

Kinston (7-7) also made four errors, but they did not lead to any runs for Salem (5-9).

Designated hitter Jason Kendall and first baseman Jon Farrell each went 2-for-3 to lead the Bucs.

\ SUNDAY: Four pitchers combined to throw a four-hitter as the Salem Buccaneers defeated the Kinston Indians 4-1.

Jason Abramavicius gave up the four hits and one earned run before leaving the game after six innings. Chris Peters, Ryan and Sean Evans each threw a hitless inning, with Evans finishing to pick up the save.

The Bucs broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth when Ramon Zapata and Kendall each singled in a run. Salem added a run in the ninth when Jake Austin singled to drive in Farrell.
