It was billed as the Firecracker 500, featuring the Taylor Select, but racing at Franklin County Speedway on Monday night might more accurately have been called the Six Hours of Callaway.
For Rodney Cundiff, it was worth the wait.
Originally scheduled to start at 6 p.m., the first race was pushed back to 7:30 because of a late-afternoon rain shower. A flurry of caution flags in the early races slowed the schedule further.
Cundiff was the big winner, taking the second (50 laps) and third segments (20 laps) of the Taylor Select. Frankie Pennington won the first 50-lap heat, and he shadowed Cundiff in the second, eventually placing second.
The first two heats paid $1,000 to the winner; the final race was worth $2,000.
Cundiff finished sixth in the first heat, which enabled him to start the second race on the pole, as the first six places were inverted. In the first segment, Pennington led 43 of 50 laps. He then moved from sixth to second early in the second heat.
"We were plum out to lunch in that first race," Cundiff said.
Cundiff's finishes of 6-1-1 edged Pennington's 1-2-6. Pennington, starting on the outside, hit the wall on lap 2 of the final heat and no longer was a threat.
Points leader Dudley Lawhorn continued his steady performances, placing 4-4-3.
A collision involving Don Pollock and Joey Sigmon on lap 26 of the second heat delayed the race nearly 40 minutes and knocked them out of competition.
In Monday night's other races:
Steve Lam won his 13th Mini Stock race in 16 starts this season. Jimmy Cox was second and Tommy Dean placed third.
Lonnie Foley was the Street Stock winner, holding off Saturday night's winner, Leon Dalton. Bill Bratton placed third.
Jay Peery prevailed in the Pure Stock race. Red Hartman and Mike Owens finished second and third, respectively.
The Mini, Street, and Pure Stock races were 35 laps, 10 longer than usual.
Buster Carroll won a 20-lap Modified race. Larry Hodges was second, one spot ahead of Chad Smith.
