CHILDREN'S LIT

The University of Virginia's Celebration of Children's Literature conference will be held Aug. 3 at the Virginia Highlands Community College Learning Center auditorium in Abingdon.

Children's author Patricia MacLaughlin, writer of ``Sarah, Plain and Tall,'' ``Skylark'' and most recently, ``Baby,'' will speak. MacLaughlin's ``Sarah, Plain and Tall'' received the Newbery Medal Award in 1986.

David Wisniewsky, also a children's author and illustrator, will demonstrate how he incorporates illustrations into his books, which include ``Sundiata: Lion King of Mali,'' ``Elfwyn's Saga,'' ``The Warrior and the Wise Man'' and ``Rain Player.''

A live telephone conference will be held with author Gary Paulsen after viewing his tape. Paulsen has received the Newbery Medal Award Honor for ``Dogsong'' and ``Hatchet.''

Judith Rosenfeld, librarian of the St. Anne's School in Bristol, will make a presentation of 100 new and better children's books. Joan Kindig, librarian at Hollymead Elementary School in Charlottesville, will talk from Charlottesville on ``Cultivating Life Long Readers: Let the Book Do It.''
