SOCCER TOURNAMENT STARTS TODAY

The Caremark International Soccer Tournament begins today at the River's Edge Sports Complex. Eight teams will participate in the competition for players ages 18 and younger, including teams from Essen, Germany and Fredensburg, Denmark, which in years past have played host to Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club teams.

The tournament also features three Roanoke Star teams from the Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club, state champion Vista Blackwatch of Fairfax, state runner-up Vista Magic of Alexandria and the Richmond Magic.

The teams will compete in round-robin play in two groups today and Thursday, with the winners in each group meeting in the championship game at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Essen, Roanoke Star U-18, Vista Blackwatch and the Richmond Magic form Group A. Group B consists of Fredensburg, Vista Magic, Roanoke Star U-17 and Roanoke Star U-16.

Many of the area's top players are entered in the Andrew Haley Memorial Junior Golf Tournament that starts today at Lynwood Golf Club in Martinsville.

Roanoke's Ryan Ketron, who finished third last year, and Salem's Nick Varney, who won the 14-15 title last year, are among the favorites in the 50-player 16-18 age division.

Other 16-18 contenders include Scott Griffin of Troutville, Eric Pitches of Bassett, Benjy Kitts of Christiansburg, Dwayne Dodson of Ridgeway and Jon Ervin of Wytheville.

The winner of the 16-18 division will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the college of his choice.

Roanoke's Jason Orlando and Brandon LaCroix, Salem's Tommy Lesperance and Martinsville's Marty Stanley are among the favorites in the 14-15 division.

Roanoke's Lee Taylor is a top contender in the 12-13 division.

The 36-hole tournament concludes Thursday.

At Rocky Mount, Roanoke Post 3 South rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to earn an 8-6 victory over Rocky Mount Post 6 in an American Legion baseball game on Tuesday.

For Post 3 South (5-3), Josh Salmon had a solo home run, Kirt Raisor was 4-for-5 and Chad Smith was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Riley Hodges hit a two-run homer for Post 6 (2-6).

Chris Colston, editor of Virginia Tech's sports newspaper, The Hokie Huddler, has won first place in a national writing contest sponsored by The College Sports Information Directors of America.

Colston's winning entry in the individual event category was an account of Virginia Tech's 45-20 victory over Indiana in December's Independence Bowl.

A native of Roanoke and a 1980 graduate of Virginia Tech, Colston is beginning his 10th year with The Huddler.
