Garnett Adkins, 39, of Christiansburg said last week that he plans to run for Montgomery County sheriff in November 1995.
Adkins is a Radford deputy sheriff, a position he has held for five years. Before that, he was a grocery store manager.
Adkins has not aligned himself with a political party.
"It's still early yet but it takes a lot of planning for a campaign. I want to have both feet on the ground when it starts," Adkins said.
Adkins is a native of Montgomery County. He is a 1974 graduate of Christiansburg High School and received his law enforcement basic training at Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem.
Adkins said he's been considering the bid since the first of the year.
Sheriff Ken Phipps said last week that it is too early to announce whether he will run for a second term.
Phipps, a Republican and retired state trooper, took office in January 1992 after defeating 14-year Democratic incumbent Louis Barber.
Last week, Jerry Olinger, a sergeant with the Virginia Tech Police Department, became the first announced candidate for sheriff.
