Varney enters today's final round at Lynwood Golf Club six shots ahead of his nearest competitors, Ryan Ketron of Roanoke and Phillip Payne.
Scott Griffin of Troutville is in a group of three golfers who are seven shots back.
Matthew Anderson leads the 14-15 age division, which Varney won last year. Anderson's 73 was two shots better than Roanoke's Jason Orlando, Salem's Tommy Lesperance and Kirk Sraughen. Roanoke's Lee Taylor shot a 75 to lead the 12-13 division.
Mandy Martin and Joannah Pattison shared the lead at 82 in the girls' division. Shelly Scruggs of Gretna is two shots back.

Two Roanoke soccer teams advanced to today's semifinals of the Caremark International Soccer Cup tournament with victories at River's Edge Sports Complex.
Roanoke Star Under-18 fell to the team from Essen, Germany, 6-5, but posted a 2-1 victory over the Richmond Magic to advance to a 9 a.m. semifinal against Fredensburg, Denmark. The Danish team beat Vista Magic of Alexandria 4-1, and the Roanoke Star Under-17 team 3-1.
Roanoke Star Under-17 went on for a 2-1 victory over Vista Magic and will face the Richmond Magic, a 5-0 winner over Essen at 9 a.m. today in a semifinal.
At 10:45 a.m., Essen will play Vista Magic in a consolation game. The championship game has been rescheduled and will take place at 2 p.m. instead of 3 p.m.
Robey Caldwell struck out 11 in a complete-game victory as Roanoke Post 3 South defeated Roanoke Post 3 North 7-3 in an American Legion baseball game.
Kevin Davis, Chad Smith and Robert Kaczmarek had two hits each to lead South (6-3). Shannon Gray hit a solo home run and Chris Carr tripled for North (7-4).
The Roanoke-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame has named its finalists for the Ray Bellamy award, which honors the high school player of the year in a surrounding seven-county region.
The finalists are: pitcher-first baseman Jason Anderson of Glenvar, pitcher-first baseman Chris Carr of William Byrd, shortstop-first baseman Ryan Gilleland of Jefferson Forest, outfielder Kevin Davis of Cave Spring and catcher Riley Hodges of Franklin County. The winner will be announced tonight before the Lynchburg Red Sox-Salem Buccaneers Carolina League game at Municipal Field.
