LIBERTY STILL HURTING FALWELL SAYS

The Rev. Jerry Falwell says the decision not to cut Liberty University employees' paychecks this summer does not mean the university has resolved its financial woes.

Paychecks were cut 50 percent over four-week periods in the summers of 1992 and 1993 to ease the strain on Liberty's operating budget. Falwell, the school's chancellor, announced Wednesday evening that this year's checks would remain intact.

But ``we're still poor, and our finances are tight,'' Falwell said at an evening service at Thomas Road Baptist Church. ``We're tightening the belt and doing all things that are prudent.''

In 1992, the pay cut was imposed on employees of all of Falwell's ministries, saving $1 million. Last year, only Liberty was affected, saving roughly $800,000.

Falwell said faculty members at Liberty received their full pay in 1992 and 1993, with the amounts withheld added to later paychecks. However, staff members never were reimbursed, he said.
