SEARCHERS FAIL TO FIND MAN IN RIVER

A man was presumed to have drowned in the James River Thursday evening in Bedford County despite bystanders' attempts to reach him after he went down.

State Game Warden M.L. Plaster said the man, whose name was not released, was swimming near the dam at Coleman Falls around 7 p.m. when he went under the water. A man who was fishing nearby and some people who were with the man attempted to reach him after he went under, but were unsucessful. Witnesses told Plaster the man came up twice before disappearing.

Plaster said a team of approximately 30 rescue workers and divers from several squads searched until around 11 p.m., but did not find the man. He said a dragging operation would begin at around 7 a.m. today, and divers would resume their search at around 8 a.m.
