3 ARRESTED IN 3RD BURGLARY OF GUN SHOP

After a 12-mile chase in which one suspect jumped from a moving car and escaped, Bedford City Police arrested an adult and two juveniles early Monday in connection with the burglary of a Bedford sporting goods store.

Mark Mitchell Lawson, 18, of Appomattox, and two 17-year-olds from Lynchburg whose names were withheld because of their age, were charged with grand larceny and breaking and entering in the burglary of Dave's Sport Shop at 205 N. Bridge St. Five rifles worth about $2,000 and a small amount of cash were stolen.

Lawson also was charged with reckless driving.

Bedford police Sgt. W.C. Graham responded to an alarm from the sporting goods store at 4:50 a.m. and said he observed a car speeding away from the vicinity.

Two city police officers and a sheriff's deputy chased the car and forced it to a stop on U.S. 221.

Before the car stopped, one suspect jumped from it and escaped arrest.

The theft was the third time guns were stolen from Dave's Sport Shop since April.

A Bedford County grand jury last week indicted two Bedford men, Robert Junior Wright and Michael Anthony Haworth, on charges of breaking and entering and grand larceny in the April7 theft of two $100 handguns from the store.

On June 24, five handguns worth about $3,000 were stolen. Police made no arrests.
