REMAINS ARE IDENTIFIED

BIG STONE GAP - Skeletal remains found two weeks ago near Big Stone Gap are those of a woman who had been missing for four years, a county investigator said.

Barbara Beard of Big Stone Gap had disappeared from her sister's house near the Wise-Lee County line on Jan. 5, 1990, said David Mullins, chief investigator for the Wise County Sheriff's Department.

The state medical examiner positively identified the remains last week.

Evidence does not point to foul play, but it has not been ruled out, Mullins said.
