TREE KILLS MAN 1ST DAY ON JOB

A man hired to clear timber from land in Franklin County was killed Tuesday when a tree limb fell on him. It was his first day on the job.

Franklin County Sheriff's Investigator G.L. Shively said Dale Lynnwood Deweese, 33, of Copper Hill and his brother were clearing a grove of trees on land owned by Larry Florin near the Blue Ridge Parkway when Deweese was killed.

A tree Deweese had sawed fell against a nearby one and apparently broke some limbs loose, Shively said. A few minutes later, one of the limbs fell and struck Deweese on the head and shoulders while he was sawing on another tree. Shively said the blow knocked Deweese to the bottom of a steep embankment. He died at the scene.

Florin's wife, Lynne, said the men had just started clearing the land Tuesday morning.
