MORE OPPORTUNITIES COMING FOR BLACKSBURG SENIORS|

Seniors in Blacksburg should get a lot more attention in the near future. The town hopes to hire a half-time SENIOR PROGRAMS COORDINATOR by Aug. 1, according to Recreation Director William Winfrey, who said recently that a senior center should follow within two years. Winfrey said the town first wants to beef up its current programs for seniors as it plans a new center. "What we will do is develop the needs, then see how they will fit into a building plan," Winfrey said.

He cited more trips for seniors and a music program as two new senior program possibilities. "Transportation is one of the biggest difficulties for seniors," he said.

Jim Moore, a member of the advisory committee that's been working with Winfrey's department on senior activities, said he'd like to see "a home away from home" for Blacksburg's older population. He estimated 5,000 seniors live in Montgomery County.
