WINSTON-SALEM HOMERS BELT BUCCANEERS AGAIN

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Adam Hyzdu struck again, this time with two solo home runs, as the Winston-Salem Spirits rebuffed a Salem rally and defeated the Buccaneers 5-3 in a Carolina League baseball game at Ernie Shore Field.

Jay Cranford opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first inning, his 12th of the season, for Salem.

Hyzdu retaliated with a home run of his own in the top of the second. Later in the inning, Dan Kopriva gave the Spirits a 4-1 lead when he smashed a three-run homer to score Paul Bako and Cleveland Ladell, who had been walked by Dave Doorneweerd.

The Bucs closed to 4-3 in the third when Marcus Hanel reached on an error and Eddie Brooks hit his fourth homer of the season to left field.

Hyzdu then blasted his 11th homer in the third for Winston-Salem.

The Buccaneers attempted to rally in the ninth when Marc Zapata and Hanel hit successive singles to put the tying run on first. Dario Tena followed with a grounder to second base that forced pinch runner Jeff Conger out at second. With runners on first and third, Jay Cranford hit a scorcher to left but Hyzdu made the catch to end the game.

Will Brunson (9-4) picked up the win for the Spirits.

Doorneweerd (3-4) allowed four hits, five runs and struck out three in a losing effort.

Tonight, Salem's Clark Wilkins (4-4, 3-94 ERA) will face Chad Fox (9-3, 3.14) as Winston-Salem tries to complete the sweep.
