Groundbreaking
St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican Catholic Church in Roanoke will break ground Sunday for a new 120-seat sanctuary.
A special service will be held at noon following the church's regular Sunday service. Bishop William Rutherfoord will lead the groundbreaking.
The new building will stand next to the current sanctuary at Hershberger and Hubert roads. Construction of the $250,000 building will begin next week and will be completed in three to five months, said a former vestryman, Dr. John Harris Jr. The old sanctuary will house the church's Sunday School program.
The 50-family local congregation is part of the worldwide Anglican Catholic Church, a group that broke away from the Episcopal Church in the late 1970s in response to modernization efforts by the larger church. The Roanoke Anglican Catholic congregation was founded 12 years ago.
