POLICE FIRE 1 LA OFFICER WHO BEAT KING

A police officer who kicked Rodney King has been fired, a month after a disciplinary panel ruled he used excessive force during the videotaped beating.

Police Chief Willie Williams signed the order firing Theodore Briseno on Thursday. The 12-year veteran was suspended without pay following the March 3, 1991, beating of King, a black motorist caught after a chase.

Harland Braun, one of Briseno's lawyers, who represented Briseno in the federal trial, said he was fired in retaliation for breaking the "code of silence" and testifying against fellow officers. - Associated Press
