ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Inflation took a 2.5 percent bite from our incomes during the past year, as the Consumer Price Index rose from 144.4 points to 148. That means goods and services that cost $144.40 a year ago totaled $148 last month. The index stood at 147.5 at the end of May.

If the base index of 100 had been for the old yardstick year of 1967 instead of today's base of 1982-1984, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, the index for June would have been 443.3.

The value of building permits continued to do well in the Roanoke Valley, even though June's $10 million was off from $11 million a year ago and $16.5 million in May. No major projects pushed up the value.

Roanoke County issued permits for 45 single-family homes and two apartment buildings, while Salem reported a new warehouse, an office warehouse and 12 new homes.
