Lewis R. Little, president of Gwaltney of Smithfield Ltd. and Smithfield Foods Inc., said the company has sufficiently reduced its inventory of Valleydale bacon to call back the workers it furloughed June 24. The second-shift workers are employed in the bacon-slicing operations.
"We had to let the demand catch up with our supply," Little said. "I know anytime you're off, it's too long, but we're bringing them back Monday night."

Lenders to extend
Westmoreland's notes
Westmoreland Coal Co., which operates mines in Wise and Lee counties, said Monday it had agreed with its lenders to extend to July 29 the maturity dates on two long-standing loans.
As of July 15, the balance due on the two credit agreements was $21 million. The company said negotiations are continuing to extend the agreements beyond July 29.
The company has other outstanding indebtedness of $25 million related to its interest in a coal export terminal in Newport News.
Westmoreland, once one of Virginia's strongest coal companies, has been troubled in recent years by poor mining conditions at some of its key mines and low coal prices.
