Homicides by kids linked to handguns

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The number of juveniles committing homicides more than tripled from 1984 to 1991, and handguns made it possible, a University of Virginia researcher says.

Dewey G. Cornell, a clinical psychologist at the university, said he used FBI reports to study the characteristics of more than 2,400 juvenile killers.

He found that homicides committed with handguns increased by 375 percent over the eight-year period, and more than 61 percent of the youths who committed murders in 1991 used handguns.

Gay paper's backer loses library seat

FAIRFAX - Fairfax County supervisors have eliminated the seat of a library board member who fought for the distribution of a gay newspaper in the county's libraries.

Monday's vote eliminated the seat of Linda Hunt, whose term had expired, and it means Republicans have a 6-5 edge on the board.

The decision could give opponents of the Washington Blade, targeted at homosexuals, a majority on the board as it continues the 18-month debate over whether the paper should be allowed in the county's libraries.
