Three events have been added this year: an informal dog show, an art show and the "Riverfest Challenge."
The dog show, featuring such categories as ugliest and best trick and a dog/owner look-alike contest, kicks off the festival at 9:30 a.m.
The Riverfest Challenge begins at 10:30. Its six events include a timed walk in which competitors predict how long it will take them to walk a mile, a three-legged race, horseshoes, Frisbee golf and volleyball.
The challenge's main feature is the raft race down the New River, scheduled for 1 p.m. Participants build their own rafts, with some restrictions. They cannot be mechanically driven, but six people per raft may paddle, push and prod their way down the river. Raft awards will include fastest, most original and "I can't believe it floats".
The entry deadline is Friday at noon. The entry fee is $25.
Winner of the Riverfest Challenge will receive $150 to be donated to the winner's favorite Radford charity or civic club.
The first Riverfest art show will give area children a chance to show off their artistic talent. The names of three winners, whose art will be permanently on display at Radford University, will be put in a drawing for a $300 scholarship fund named in the child's honor and a $30 gift certificate for art supplies.
At 4 p.m. more than 500 rubber ducks will compete in the American Cancer Society's fourth annual Duck Derby. Five bucks buys a duck; $20 buys five. The winner will receive dinner for two on the New River Cruise. Ducks can be purchased at local banks and Felix Bookstore.
Other Riverfest '94 attractions include plenty of food and craft vendors, kite flying, line dancing, a raffle for a hot air balloon ride, a drawing for a jet ski and country-and-western singer Kari Taylor.
