ITT Corp., New York operator of a night-vision products plant and a gallium arsenide technology center in Roanoke County, reported second-quarter net income of $258 million, or $1.97 per share, compared with $267 million, or $2.02 a share, a year earlier. Sales and revenues were $6.4 billion, up from $5.8 billion a year ago. For the first six months, net income was $477 million, or $3.64 per share, compared with $442 million, or $3.32 a share, a year earlier. Revenues were $11.9 billion compared with $11.2 billion.
Ruddick Corp.
Ruddick Corp., Charlotte, N.C., parent of Harris Teeter Inc. supermarkets in the Roanoke Valley, reported net income of $9.3 million, or 39 cents per share, in its third quarter ended July 3, up from $8.8 million, or 37 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales were $487 million vs. year-ago $424 million. For the nine months, sales were $1.42 billion compared to $1.26 billion, and net income was $23 million, or 97 cents per share, compared with the prior year's $28.7 million or $1.20 per share.
Caterpillar Inc.
Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., parent of Carter Machinery Co. of Salem, reported a second-quarter profit of $240 million, or $2.36 per share, compared with $67 million, or 66 cents, a year earlier. Sales and revenues were $3.61 billion and were 24 percent higher than a year earlier.
Six-month results were not reported.
CSX Corp.
CSX Corp., Richmond-based transportation and real estate company with operations in Western Virginia, reported second-quarter net earnings of $162 million, or $1.55 per share, compared with $154 million, or $1.48 a share, a year earlier. Operating revenues were $2.37 billion for the quarter ended July 1, compared with $2.26 billion. For the first six months, CSX reported net earnings of $236 million, or $2.26 a share, compared with $145 million, or $1.39 a share. Revenues were $4.60 billion, up from $4.33 billion.
Hubbell Inc.
Hubbell Inc., an Orange, Conn., manufacturer of industrial wiring and controls with a plant in Christiansburg, reported second-quarter net income of $26.5 million, or 83 cents per share, compared with $25.0 million, or 79 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales were $261.9 million, up from $211.3 million. For the first six months, net income was $50.8 million, or $1.60 per share, compared with $49.0 million, or $1.55 a share. Sales were $469 million compared with $409.3 million.
