Hospital celebration

PEARISBURG - Giles Memorial Hospital will celebrate the opening of its newly constructed and renovated emergency department and outpatient facilities on Saturday. Hospital officials say the improvements are state-of-the-art.

Ribbon cutting will begin at 10 a.m., and tours of the $830,000 project will continue until 1 p.m.About 5,500 square feet were renovated, of which 3,000 square feet are new.

This completes Phase I of the project. Phase II, which includes renovated radiology facilities, an in-house CT Scanner and main lobby is scheduled for completion this fall. Call 921-6076.

Lifelong learning

RADFORD - Radford University will sponsor a conference of the Virginia Adult Institute of Lifelong Learning Wednesday through July 29. About 250 literacy and adult education teachers from throughout the state are expected to attend.

"Choices and Challenges" will be the theme of the conference, and will focus on issues, materials and legislation, said Jane Swing, Radford University's coordinator of adult education.

The Clinton administration has called for closer coordination among agencies that encourage adult education. Some adult-education teachers fear possible funding cuts when the federal Adult Education Act is reviewed next year.

In addition to legislative concerns, the conference will also look at the use of new technology, new ways of assessing learning, research and a trend toward providing educational services at the workplace. Call 831-5324 .

Va. 114 meeting

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Route 114 Citizen Network meets Tuesday, July 26, 7:30 p.m., at Belmont Community Center on Dominion Drive. The proposed widening of Virginia 114 (Peppers Ferry Road) and other issues will be discussed. Lance Terpenny, assistant to the town manager of Christiansburg, will attend. Call Ann Hess, 382-8235.

Literature class

CHRISTIANSBURG - A class in Native American literature, ENG 199-70, will be offered this fall by New River Community College. The class will be taught at the college's Christiansburg site in the former Appalachian Power Co. building, 412 Roanoke St. The class will meet Wednesdays, starting Aug. 24, 7-9:40 p.m.

Instructor Sally Harris will introduce students to American Indian literature, starting with a brief look at the oral literature of early American Indians and including myths and legends and other facets in their cultural development. The course also will cover the social and spiritual aspects of Native American life as depicted in the works of several prominent authors.

Flood aid sought

PULASKI - The Salvation Army is seeking donations to help victims of flooding in Georgia. The organization has been providing assistance with mobile disaster units, shelters and money. The Salvation Army also is providing cleaning supplies, food, water and other aid as the flood waters recede. Contributions may be mailed to P.O. Box 229, Pulaski, Va. 24301. Call 980-2400.

Photos sought

BLACKSBURG - The tourism committee of the Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce is looking for photographs of Blacksburg to use on the cover of a new map booklet. Any scene in Blacksburg in any season will be considered.

Professional or amateur photographers are welcome to submit up to three slides or color photographs for which negatives are available. The photographer's name and telephone number must be on each photo or slide.

After evaluation by the committee, photographs will be returned if a self-addressed envelope with adequate postage is submitted with the work, or photographers will be notified to pick up their photos at the Chamber office.

There is no budget to pay for use of photographs, but each photographer will receive a credit line in the brochure. The tourism committee will be responsible for all color separation and printing costs.
