FAMILY AFFAIR: A tractor pull, choral music, beach bands and a radio all will contribute to the enjoyment at the Rockbridge Regional Fair. It will begin Tuesday and conclude July 30 at the Virginia Horse Center at Lexington.
The headliner July 29 will be country singer Doug Stone. Mountain Thunder also will perform.
A carnival midway and lots of exhibits in the crafts and livestock realm will tie things up nicely.

CRAWL ON DOWN: Insect Expo flutters back to the Science Museum of Western Virginia in Roanoke on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to live creatures, the museum will present live entomologists who will discuss insect colonies, tropical species, insects and the environment and the like.
Visitors are asked to leave their bugs at home and meet some new ones, including a Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula, cockroaches and millipedes. Call 342-5710.
PURRFECT TIMING: ``Cats,'' the Broadway musical that's added greatly to Andrew Lloyd Webber's fortune, will be presented at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium Aug. 1 and 2 at 7:30 p.m.. MOUNTAIN MUSIC: ``The Sound of Music'' has opened at the Showtimers Studio in Roanoke. The classic stage play with songs like ``Do Re Mi'' and ``Climb Every Mountain'' shows Rodgers and Hammerstein at their best.

GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME: The Virginia Cantaloupe Festival will blossom again in Turbeville, seven miles west of South Boston, Wednesday from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Beach bands like the Embers, the Upper Level Band and the Chairmen of the Board will perform.
The menu will include barbecued beef, baked beans and slaw, ice cream and, of course, canteloupe. The exact location of the event is John Wade's farm on Virginia 658 in Halifax County.

EASY LIVING: ``Songs in the Night,'' a free evening of sacred and secular music, will be tonight from 7 to about 9 outside of Virginia Heights Baptist Church at the corner of Grandin Road and Memorial Avenue in Roanoke.
The church choir, assorted soloists, jazz from Joe Corne and the Regents, handbells and other instruments will be featured. Admission is free, and so will be the lemonade, popcorn and watermelon. Who says there's nothing to do around here?
BIG SHOULDERS ``Chicago,'' the Bob Fosse musical, is under way at Live Arts in Charlottesville. Through Aug. 13 it will serve up generous portions of lust, greed, murder and betrayal in 1920s America. Vaudeville is the form of choice.
