CAVE SPRING ADVANCES

The Cave Spring American Little League 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars defeated Colburn 7-5 in the loser's bracket of the Virginia Little League All-Star tournament Saturday in St. Paul.

Trailing 5-2, Cave Spring rallied in the top of the sixth inning, paced by Andrew Holben's two-out, two-run double that put Cave Spring (3-2) ahead 6-5. Right-hander Jake Landis got the victory.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke finished third at the USTA National Clay-Court Championships at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He defeated Joel Berman of Seminole, Fla., 6-1, 6-3 in the boys' 14-under division.

Lynda Leffler and Nelson Prillaman will take on Susan Cox and Rob Williamson in the gold-medal match of the Commonwealth Games of Virginia's mixed doubles tennis competition at 11 this morning at the Crystal Spring Courts. Leffler and Prillaman advanced by beating Dale Fitzgerald and Tracy Sledd 6-2, 6-0. Cox and Williamson eliminated Bonnie Longworth and Randy Dickey 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. Fitzgerald and Sledd will face Longworth and Dickey for the bronze medal at 11 a.m.

Top-seeded Rich's/Superior and second-seeded Convertors/Vernon's advanced to the winners' bracket final in the Dudley USSSA Major NIT at the James Moyer Complex in Salem today at 8:30 a.m. The championship game will be played at 12:30 p.m.

For Rich's/Superior, Dirk Androff is 20-for-22 with 13 home runs. For Converters/Vernon's, Dave Steffer is 15-for-17 with 13 home runs.

In the losers' bracket, Bell eliminated New 74-24, and Hague eliminated Pace 57-19. At 8 this morning, Bell plays Williams and Hague plays Steele in the losers' bracket semifinals.
