WVU CLARIFIES SITUATION WITH VIRGINIA PLAYER

A Virginia high school basketball player won't play at West Virginia because he didn't qualify, not because of an admissions mixup, WVU coach Gale Catlett said.

News reports this past week said Antwaine Smith of Ferguson High School in Newport News, Va., was not admitted to West Virginia because his application mistakenly was sent to the admissions office instead of the basketball office.

Smith failed to score high enough on his Scholastic Assessment Test for admission but was supposed to receive a special NCAA waiver as ``learning disabled'' because of his 2.0 grade-point average, the reports said.
