SANFORD LIFTS BUCS

Salem got crisp pitching and got the better of a benches-clearing fight Sunday, but its most important asset was second baseman Chance Sanford.

Sanford hit two three-run homers as the Bucs ripped the Wilmington Blue Rocks 8-1 in a Carolina League baseball game at Wilmington's Legends Stadium.

Salem starter Marc Wilkins and reliever Steve Parris (1-1) gave up one run through eight innings, and closer Sean Evans pitched the ninth.

The score was tied 1-1 in the sixth when the Bucs' Dario Tena reached first on shortstop Jason Marshall's error. Ramon Zapata walked and Marcus Hanel hit into a fielder's choice before Sanford untied the score with his 12th homer.

Before Sanford's homer came the brawl. Salem's Wilkins and Jeff Conger were ejected, as were Wilmington's Roderick Myers, Andy Stewart, Felix Martinez and Lance Jennings.

In the eighth, Tena singled, stole second and scored on Zapata's grounder to short. Hanel doubled and Austin singled before Sanford's 13th homer made it 8-1.

Wilkins gave up five hits and a run before he was tossed. Parris gave up three hits in four innings, and Evans finished.
