GOP THREATENS COLEMAN'S BACKERS

The latest threat in the U.S. Senate race in Virginia comes from the head of the Fairfax County Republican Committee, who has warned he will oust any party official who publicly backs Marshall Coleman's independent campaign.

In a letter sent Friday, GOP Chairman D. Patrick Mullins said he would remove disloyal Republicans from the county committee and try to block their seating at future nominating conventions.

``I don't need people claiming they're Republicans for Marshall Coleman,'' he said in an interview last week. ``They're really not Republicans.''

Several prominent Republicans, including Sen. John Warner and former Gov. Linwood Holton, have abandoned the party this year to support Coleman, a former Republican state attorney general, because they say they cannot support GOP nominee Oliver North.
