BOYDEN, Lloyd, R., 65, of Prairie View, Texas, died Monday, July 25, 1994. Dr. Boyden was born in Roanoke, August 4, 1928, to Nannie and George Boyden, who preceded him in death. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Bennie Boyden; one brother, Edward and his wife, Esther; and one aunt, Eva Boyden. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 1994, at Mt. CALDWELL, Jessie Walter, 79, of Catawba, died Monday, July 25, 1994, in a Salem hospital. He is preceded in death by a son, Steve Caldwell and survived by his wife, Ruth F. Caldwell; four daughters and sons-in-law, Noline and Fredrick Jones, Catawba, Wanda and Edward Jones, Catawba, Lucy and Leonard Huffman, Salem, Joyce and Randall Horne, Troutville; a sister, Thelma Epperly, Roanoke; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; five stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at New Canterbury Church with interment in the Caldwell Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Boitnott Funeral Home.

HARVEY, Rosetta Mayberry, 93, of Max Meadows, died July 25, 1994. She was the widow of Lawrence C. Harvey. She was a member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church. Her father The Rev. L. D. Mayberry was pastor of this church when it was dedicated in 1919. She taught school in Wythe County for 43 years. She is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Joe Bass, Marion; one grandson and wife, Gordon and Nancy Bass, Richmond; one granddaughter and husband, Jane and Richard Koris, Carnegie, Pa.; one great-granddaughter, Ariel Koris, Carnegie, Pa.; one niece, Lucy Mayberry Robertson, Staunton; one nephew, Melvin Thomas Mayberry, Galax; one sister-in-law, Louise Felty Mayberry of Galax. Memorial service will be held at Max Meadows United Church, Saturday July 30, 1994 at 2 p.m. Dr. James McReynolds will officiate. The famil y will receive friends at the church one hour before service. Interment will follow in the McGavock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the Max Meadows United Methodist Church. The Grubb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

RHODES, Daisy H. Harshbarger, 77, of Roanoke, died Monday, July 25, 1994 at her home. She was retired from General Electric Company in Salem. She is survived by two sons, Jacob C. Harshbarger, Jr. and George A. Harshbarger of Salem; three daughters, Suan Gray of Salem, Connie Hagan of Fredericksburg, Lynn Long of Roanoke; two sisters, Lottie Bynum and Nell Ulery of Roanoke; one brother, Sam Hofawger of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held thursday, July 28, 1994 at 10 a.m. at the Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy White officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. SPEARS, John James, 71, of Wytheville, a long time resident of Niagara Falls, N.Y., died Monday, July 25, 1994 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late John Henry and Alice Doss Spears. he was retired from General Motors and was a U. S. Army veteran of P.O.W. of World War II/ Mr. Spears was a member of Iva Lodge No. 173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was preceded in death by his first wife, Mamie E. Pike Sparks Spears. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Spears; one daughter, Gloria Spears Burritt of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; two stepsons, George ""Jack"" Sparks of Ivanh oe, Robert Sparks of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; three sisters, Ollie Gilbert, Clara Moses, both of Austinville, Geneva Marshall of Panama City, Fla.; one brother, Rodney Spears of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services and interment will be held Thursday, July 28, 1994, at 2 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Ivanhoe with the Rev. Earnest Chinault officiating. He will be laid to rest with his first wife, Mamie E. Pike Sparks Spears. The American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military honors. SWARTZ, Dale Leroy, 72, of Roanoke, and formerly of Ohio, passed away Monday, July 25, 1994. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Frances Swartz. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jack F. Swartz and Mary Sue Swartz; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Swartz, Kimberly D. Swartz; two sisters. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel with burial to follow Friday in the Salem Cemetery, Wyandot Co., Ohio. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel.

THOMAS, Susie Lester, 96, of Christiansburg, died Friday, July 22, 1994. Survivors include a sister, Anna Lester, Christiansburg. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Asbury United Methodist Church with burial in the Schaeffer Memorial Cemetery.

THOMPSON, Alice Hughes, 71, of Abingdon, died Tuesday, July 26, 1994 at her residence of 310 Morningside Lane. She was a native of Abingdon and had lived in Roanoke before moving to Abingdon in 1959. She was a member of the Abingdon Baptist Church and was the widow of Walter V. ""Bud"" Thompson. Survivors include four sons, Mike Thompson, Bristol, Va., Tim Thompson and Greg Thompson, both of Abingdon, Don Thompson, Washington, D.C.; one sister, Jean H. Bain, Downingtown, Pa.; four brothers, Doug Hughes, Bristol, Va., Tom Hughes, Blountville, Tenn., John P. Hughes, Jonesville, Tony L. Hughes, Abingdon; five grandsons; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Hughes Thompson will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lester McKinnon officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. The following nephews and friends will serve as active pallbearers: Mike Hagy, Jim Hagy, Steve Lowe, Jamie Hughes, Jimmy Hughes, Kenneth Hughes, Larry Hughes and Tommy Hughes. TROUT, M. PAULINE, (Tootsie), 74, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, died Friday, July 22, 1994 at her home. She was a retired bookkeeper from Gallahan's Furniture in Fredericksburg. She was a graduate of Roanoke Business College. She was a member of First Christian Church in Fredericksburg, a former member of Belmont Baptist in Roanoke, and the Fredericksburg Christian Business and Professional Women's Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Lewis Trout and Ruth Snyder Trout. She is survived by her son, James L. Kemp of Arlington, Va; his fiancee, Teri O'Dwyer of Fairfax, and her children, Brian and Steven. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 30, 1994, 12 p.m., Sherwood Memorial Park, with the Rev. TURNER, Elsie Cox, 70, of Bassett, died Monday, July 25, 1994. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday, Collins Funeral Chapel Bassett.

UNDERWOOD, Ida Marie, 87, of Riner, our beloved mother, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 25, 1994. She is survived by seven sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Delena Underwood, Akron, Ohio, Bill Underwood and Dorothy Smith, Floyd, Ray and Jo Underwood, Columbus, Ga., Melvin and Bertha Underwood, Bethel, Ak., Freddie and Kari Underwood, China Grove, N.C., Dana and Carol Sue Underwood, Roanoke, Roger and Pat Underwood, Dublin; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Charles Pal mer, Riner, Darlene and Carl Jones, Judy and Steve Angle, all of Christiansburg; thirty-seven grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by all. Friends may call anytime after noon on Wednesday at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends there from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Union Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Buford Linkous, the Rev. Layne Board and the Rev. Ballard Shepherd. She will be laid to rest near her childhood home in Adams County, Ohio. Due to burial being out of state, the family requests flowers be omitted and contributions made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. WHEELER, John Douglas, 81, of Natural Bridge Station, died Monday, July 25, 1994 at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born in Buena Vista, Va. on February 5, 1913, the son of the late John and Laura Coleman Wheeler. He is survived by his wife, Lurinda Hundley Wheeler; and one sister, Della Wheeler Cash, Fredericksburg. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Lomax Funeral Chapel by the Elder Alvin Coleman. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

WOODFORD, Doug, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Sunday, July 24, 1994. He was a Korean War veteran. He is survived by two sons, John Woodford, Spokane, Wash., Jan Woodford, Rapid City, S.D.; one daughter, Janie Wood, Roanoke; two grandsons; four granddaughters; one great-granddaughter. Funeral Thursday, 2 p.m., V.A. Hospital Chapel, Phoenix, Ariz. Burial will be in National Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz.
