Baby-shaker sentenced to 3 years

VIRGINIA BEACH - A day-care worker was sentenced to serve three years in prison Tuesday and ordered never to work in day-care again after pleading guilty to shaking a 2-month-old so hard that the child's eyes and brain hemorrhaged.

Katherine Hannah, 30, of Virginia Beach was sentenced to 10 years after pleading guilty to felony child neglect, but a circuit judge suspended seven years of the sentence.

Hannah claimed bad menstrual cramps and problems with her boyfriend led to her actions.

The judge further ordered that Hannah never again be employed in a child-care situation.

The child, Melinda Griggs, now 11 months old, is recovering .

Workers sick; courthouse is, too

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The city courthouse was closed Tuesday after being diagnosed as a ``sick building,'' believed to be linked to nausea and dizziness reported by several employees.

Mold, mildew and fungus growing in the ventilation system apparently caused some employees to have allergic reactions, according to David Easton, an industrial hygienist in the University of Virginia Environmental Health and Safety Office. Up to nine workers have been affected.

The courthouse will remain closed until Thursday morning so indoor air experts can disinfect the ventilation system.

Couple accused of secret taping

FAIRFAX - A husband and wife were charged with disorderly conduct at a shopping mall after someone complained they were videotaping women, Fairfax County police said.

Police confiscated the videotape and said the tape showed women's legs and dresses.

Fair Oaks Mall security received two reports of a man and woman approaching women at the mall before closing time Sunday. The couple carried a shopping bag that they would take turns holding, police spokesman Warren Carmichael said. Once they stopped a woman to talk, they would place the bag behind, underneath or close to the woman's skirt, Carmichael said.

Officers took Pavel Safar and Maria Safar, both of Manassas, into custody and charged them with disorderly conduct. The couple were released pending a hearing.

Martinsville man indicted in bombing

MARTINSVILLE - A motorcycle shop operator has been arrested in a bombing last year that seriously injured a worker at a Sara Lee Knit Products plant.

Michael D. Draper, 28, of Martinsville was indicted Monday on charges of possession of an explosive device and malicious wounding.

James E. Harris, a worker at the plant, was seriously injured in the Oct. 22 blast in the building's parking lot.

Roy Hairston, who was nearby when the bomb exploded, said he thought the bomb, which was left in a shopping bag outside his car, was meant for him. Draper is already on probation because of a shooting involving Hairston last spring. Draper was ordered held on $25,000 bond, according to a police report.

Sailor alleges rape by shipmate

VIRGNIA BEACH - A female sailor serving aboard the USS Eisenhower, the first combat ship with female crew members, has told Navy officials she was raped by a shipmate in a Virginia Beach park, officials said.

Cmdr. Kevin Wensing, a spokesman for the Atlantic fleet in Norfolk, said Naval criminal investigators and the Eisenhower's command are looking into the alleged July 15 assault.

Both sailors are continuing to serve aboard the Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier that returns to Norfolk today from training exercises off Virginia that began July 18, Wensing said.
