The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Christiansburg sponsors its ROCKING GRANNIES ROCKATHON Aug. 13, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., during the New River Valley Mall Community Fair. RSVP seeks individuals and local businesses to sponsor rockers. They plan to use the proceeds to set up an RSVP scholarship fund.
By the way, the RSVP yard sale July 22 went off without a hitch, Jo Lambert at RSVP reports. The group will use the money to buy new tires for their vans, which provide transportation for seniors.
Radford High School's CLASS OF '44 enjoyed a successful 50th class reunion July 23, reports Mary Jane Harmon, a class member and the city's Senior Center coordinator. Of the 100-plus original class members, Harmon says around half of them turned out for the event. Counting spouses and guests, 86 people enjoyed the occasion.

Walk-a-Roos Senior Walking Club meets each Thursday at 7 a.m. to walk at New River Valley Mall, followed by breakfast at Hardees at 8. Walkers pick a "destination," then pool their walking mileage until they reach it. Right now, they've begun "walking" to Australia, 10,846 miles.
Travel Saturday to the Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon. Transportation is $4 and leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 8:30 a.m.
Legacy Quilt Show applications are available at the center. The show is Sept. 17 during the Wilderness Trail Festival.

Wednesday: The Christiansburg morning group goes to Heritage Hall at 10 a.m. The afternoon group visits Meadowbrook at 2 p.m.
Aug 4: The Blacksburg group helps with the SHARE mailing at 1:30 p.m. at New River Community Action.

Thursday, it's double feature time as the center screens two black-and-white Zane Grey classics: "Man of the Forest," at 9:30 a.m., and "Rocky Mountain Mystery," at 10:40 a.m. Bring your own popcorn.
Tuesday at 7 p.m., enjoy the free concert of vocal selections with John Barnett at the gazebo in Bisset Park. Lawn chairs or blankets recommended. Concert will be canceled in case of rain.
The next Road Runner trip is Aug. 3 to Barter Theatre, Abingdon, the Highland Festival and Martha Washington Inn. Trips are first-come, first-served. The center has itineraries.

The deadline is Friday for New River Valley senior poets to enter original, unpublished poems in the 16th annual poetry contest for senior citizens. Ten winners will be chosen from Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and Radford. The New River Community College's Office of Continuing Education has details at 674-3607.
In cooperation with the American Association of Retired Persons, Radford Community Hospital sponsors 55-Alive Driving Classes Aug. 3-4, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Norwood Professional Center in downtown Radford.
Other 55-Alive classes - which promote defensive driving techniques - are set for Aug. 11-12, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Bank of Floyd, and Aug. 16-17 at New River Valley Mall's community room. Space is limited. To register, call the Radford Community Hospital public affairs department, 731-2380.
