The Coastal Corp., Houston parent of ARN Coal Co. and Coastal Coal Sales Co. of Roanoke, reported second-quarter net earnings of $43.1 million, or 37 cents per share, up from $26.3 million, or 23 cents, for the 1993 period. Revenues were $2.5 billion against $2.6 billion.
Six-month net earnings were $124.2 million, or $1.10 per share, compared with $51.3 million, or 47 cents, in the year-earlier period. Revenues were $5.2 billion against $5.3 billion.
Modine Manufacturing
Modine Manufacturing Co., Racine, Wis., maker of heating and ventilation equipment with operations in Buena Vista, reported record first-quarter net earnings of $14.8 million, or 49 cents per share, up 50.2 percent from $10.8 million, or 32 cents, in the 1993 quarter. Sales for the quarter ended June 26 totaled a record $208.4 million, up 41.6 percent from $147.2 million.
\ Chesapeake Corp.
Chesapeake Corp., Richmond parent of Chesapeake Packaging Co. in Roanoke, reported second-quarter net income of $5.6 million, or 24 cents per share, compared with $1.3 million, or 5 cents, in the 1993 quarter. Sales were a record $236.9 million against $236.4 million.
Net income for the first half was $8.3 million, or 35 cents per share, up from $500,000, or 2 cents, in the 1993 half. Sales were $448.9 million against $445.7 million.
Carmike Cinemas
Carmike Cinemas Inc., Columbus, Ga., operator of movie theaters in Roanoke and Salem, reported second-quarter net income of $1.6 million, or 20 cents per share, down from $1.9 million, or 24 cents, a year earlier. Revenues were $68.1 million, up from $50.9 million.
For the six months, net income rose to $3.3 million, or 40 cents per share, from $2.8 million, or 36 cents. Revenues were $135.5 million, up from $93.9 million.
