MISSING MAN FOUND DROWNED

A depressed man reported missing Tuesday was found dead in the James River later in the day, a victim of drowning.

Manuel Garcia Jr., 39, of Buchanan was camping with Susan Haney in the Springwood area in a section of the river called Oxbow when he disappeared Monday morning, Botetourt County Sheriff Reed Kelly said.

Haney told sheriff's deputies that Garcia was gone from their tent when she woke up about 11 a.m. Monday. She said Garcia had been depressed, and it was common for him to go off by himself for as much as a day at a time, so she packed up the camp and went home. When he hadn't returned Tuesday, she called the sheriff's office.

Reed said deputies had just begun to search the area around 2 p.m. when two men and a boy who were floating the river and fishing hailed them. Reed said the men asked if the deputies were looking for a body, and said they had just seen one up-river.

An autopsy performed Wednesday indicated that Garcia drowned, Reed said. He does not believe foul play was involved.
