NORTH, CRITICS TUSSLE OVER FUND-RAISING TACTICS

California residents sent more large campaign checks to Oliver North this year than the U.S. Senate candidate collected in Virginia, critics of the Republican nominee said Wednesday.

North brought in $207,798 from California donors though the end of June, compared with $149,639 from Virginia donors, according to an accounting by Clean Up Congress, a pro-environment group that is working to defeat North.

The group used Federal Election Commission records to calculate that North has accepted 85 percent of his large donations from outside Virginia. The FEC records do not include contributions of less than $200.

North has raised more than $6 million for his bid for the seat held by Democratic Sen. Charles Robb. Robb has raised more then $2 million. More than 75 percent of Robb's donations came from outside Virginia.

Independents Marshall Coleman, a former Republican attorney general, and Douglas Wilder, a former Democratic governor, also are seeking the Senate seat.

Campaigning at a fire hall in Dahlgren, North dismissed the criticism. ``There are more Virginians who have given to this campaign than the other three combined,'' he said.
