RED CROSS RECEIVES $6,050

The Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has received $6,050 in response to its call for donations to support relief operations in Rwanda, Zaire and other countries affected by the Rwandan conflict.

The local Red Cross has received 81 cash gifts since making a public plea last weekend for donations. More than half of the donations came in on Tuesday, said Terry Lewis, the chapter's communication director.

"We don't usually have $4,000 to $5,000 coming in in a single day," Lewis said. "The fact that it's coming in in this large amount very early is very positive for the Red Cross."

The death rate in and around Goma, Zaire, has increased to 3,000 per day from cholera and dehydration, according to a news release issued Wednesday by Red Cross national headquarters in Washington.

Contributions marked "Rwanda Relief" may be sent to local Red Cross chapters or to the Roanoke Valley Chapter, American Red Cross, 352 Church Ave. SW, Roanoke 24016.
