DARE, a statewide drug education program, offers pupils in the fifth or sixth grades a 17-week program on drug awareness, according to Jim Felts, DARE coordinator with the state Department of Education.
The program in many school districts begins with short programs as early as kindergarten and extends through high school. Comments about drug education programs by a Virginia Tech researcher in Tuesday's New River Current were about drug education efforts in general, and were not intended to describe the state's DARE program.
